President’s report
It’s been a big month for Editors Victoria. Everyone is either adjusting to their new roles or busy continuing in their ongoing positions. I’m very keenly anticipating the arrival of spring. It’s having a peek already: my freesias are in flower. There’s nothing much better than their heady smell.
I am very pleased to announce we have a new events officer – Sarah Lemcke. Sarah is a freelance editor and book designer and has been a familiar face at our recent networking lunches. We’re all very much looking forward to working with Sarah.
We are still looking for additional subcommittee members for professional development, events and communications. Our first social get-together for the 2026–27 year is on 4 September at Arcadia Café in Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. This is a great chance to meet your new committee and relax and chat with other editors. You can book here.
On 17 September, Dr Alicia Leigh will run a workshop on trauma-informed editing. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to edit difficult narratives with empathy and get practical tools to handle trauma-themed work. Alicia spoke at one of our events last year and was a very popular guest. There are still some spots available. You can book here.
Our student adviser, Duncan Hale, is putting together our next “Ask an editor” session for students and early-career editors. Keep an eye out for updates. I went to the last one and was so impressed with the panellists and how it was run. It’s such a great (and free!) way to get insights into editing pathways.
I’m also planning to go to the next session for the new special interest group for business, government and corporate editors on 16 September 2026. This is a great way to meet other editors who do that kind of work. Bookings can be made here.
