Meet the Editors Queensland committee: Glenine Hamlyn AE
Glenine stumbled into Editors Queensland (EdsQ) – the then Society of Editors (Queensland) – in 2013, when she returned to editing as a profession after a break of too many years to mention! Wanting to be useful, she began volunteering for the society and has remained involved with the EdsQ branch committee ever since.
Glenine gained accreditation in 2014 and served as the branch president from 2022 to 2025. She is now vice-president and is particularly excited by the idea of helping to bring editors together in regional areas.
“Volunteering on the committee has given me so much more than I could have given to EdsQ. Learning from peers – not just about editing, but about being part of a team in which mutual respect and encouragement set the tone – is a powerful way to learn. I also love to see editors get together socially and discover how much fun that can be.”
Having started as a teacher of English in a Queensland high school, Glenine headed to Europe for a year and returned 24 years later.
“It was in Germany that I learned the tricks of the editing trade, editing textbooks in upper-school English for German schools. My subsequent experience in overseas aid and the management of an ecumenical organisation extended my professional reach. I have drawn on that experience in editing books in the humanities for a university publisher.”
Glenine is also a NAATI-certified translator (German to English) and speaks German at home every second day with her husband from Hamburg. She loves the challenge of living in 2 languages. Apart from that, she often wields a mattock in the garden, when she’s not busy drawing and painting (especially portraits).
