By Duncan Hale
On Friday 24 April, Editors Victoria held its first student event of the year. The “Ask an editor” panel discussion, moderated by Student Advisor Duncan Hale, managed to successfully inspire the next generation of editors.
The panellists – Thirangie Jayatilake, a freelance editor and Editors Victoria inclusion advisor; Steph Huddleston, the academic content manager at Cambridge University Press; and Christine Bayley, an intern at Allen & Unwin, Children’s and Young Adult Books – answered questions with insight and candour.
Topics covered included gaining employment, the nature of freelance editing, what makes a “good” editor and how to cope with the looming threat of AI.
With a record number of attendees, this event showed promise not only for the future of editing, but also for the engagement of students with IPEd.
A huge thanks from Duncan to the editors involved in the panel, IPEd committee members who assisted on the day and to all the keen students who attended. More student events to come!
