IPEd

From the committee

The EdNSW committee met on 12 April for its monthly meeting via Zoom, with two apologies.

Minutes of the March committee meeting were accepted and actions from previous meetings reviewed.

Written reports received included:

  • Accreditation Board delegate
  • branch budget commentary with preliminary estimates for March 2022
  • membership
  • mentoring
  • networking
  • presentation schedule and ideas.

We are delighted to announce Meredith McGowan has joined the committee as our Professional Development delegate. The committee looks forward to working with Meredith and members can look forward to an update on workshops.

Our next speaker presentation is on 7 June 2022. Rosanna Arciuli and Virginia Morrison from the Copyright Agency will present Copyright aspects of online presenting and training, this will be a topical and useful talk given the shift for many of us to working from home.

Our speakers and topics are confirmed for the rest of the year – there will be speaker presentations in September and October.

Our networking coordinator, Olivia Wroth, has been busy. There were two regional editors’ lunches in March – on the South Coast and in Newcastle. Thanks to those who organised and attended these get-togethers. More are on the menu.

Arrangements are being made for a couple of members’ networking events in Sydney: a drinks night in May and our traditional mid-year dinner in July.

Two new IPEd members joined the branch in March.

There are currently four active mentorships in the NSW mentoring program. Thanks to those members who responded to our recent expression of interest for new mentees.

Our financial position remains sound and we continue to operate within budget guidelines. Preliminary estimates indicate revenue of $513 and expenditure of $372 in March.

Preparations continue for our Annual Branch Meeting on 2 August 2022. We have simplified our process for seeking branch committee nominations – and we encourage all branch members to consider joining the committee-to-be (for 2022–23).

The committee has reviewed the schedule of meeting on a monthly basis. Much of our business these days is conducted out of session and in working groups. We plan to meet (online) six times a year, with additional meetings on an as-needs basis, going forward.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for 14 June 2022.

Networking

Editors’ lunches

Mark Lock, Patrick Cullen and Debby Hicks (organiser) braved the weather and met for lunch on 31 March at Bolton St Pantry in Newcastle. We chatted about our interactions with IPEd and enjoyed general conversation. The lunch was timed to coincide with the Newcastle Writer’s Festival, and we hoped to also catch up there that weekend.

Editors from the South Coast region, Kim Wilson (organiser), Rae Luckie and Kai Jensen, met up on Friday 25 March at the Gundary Bakers in Moruya for lunch on the covered verandah. It was the first time we’d met, and although our backgrounds varied widely (with experience ranging from creative writing, mentoring and poetry authoring to policy management, consulting and maths editing) we easily found common ground and enjoyed a good chat about all sorts of stuff. We look forward to welcoming more South Coast editors at our next lunch.
