Message from the President

As we press forward into the year, I know it’s been a strange time for many members. Last February brought lockdown, bushfires and floods around the state which no doubt disrupted business for some of you. If there is something the EdWA committee can do to help support you in times like this, or if there are PD opportunities you think would help you get your business back on track, I urge you to please get in touch.

We are thrilled to have so many newly accredited editors in our branch following the accreditation exam in December last year. On behalf of the committee, I’d like to congratulate all those who passed. It’s no easy feat and I know a lot of study and preparation went into those hard-earned results. To those who missed out this time, I know it can be disheartening to see your efforts fall short, but I am confident that by the time the next exam comes around you’ll be more than prepared and ready to ace it.

It can be easy to feel lonely in this profession, particularly for rural members, which is why our committee is working hard to provide social and networking events this year. Our first in-person meet-up for 2021 will be the Café Society at 3.30pm on 21 March at The Shorehouse in Swanbourne. We’ll also run an online meet-up on 20 April at 6pm.

Our first member meeting of the year is now booked in for 25 March with guest speaker Per Henningsgaard AE presenting on WA book publishing. He will provide an overview of the diversity of book publishing available in WA, introducing us to potential work for editors and avenues of publication for authors.

And finally, we now have a Mentor Coordinator. Cheryl Bettridge AE will be looking after those looking to participate in the IPEd Mentoring Program. If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, or in undertaking a mentorship to build your skills or business, please contact edwa.mentorship@iped-editors.org.

We’re busy planning more events for the rest of the year and hope to have more announcements coming soon. Until next time, I look forward to seeing you all at our range of events.

Best wishes

Jess Gately
