Board update
From the IPEd Board
This update reports on the IPEd Board meeting of 12 October 2026, linking to our 5 strategic priorities.
1 Standards
Registrations have been flowing in for the first part of the accreditation exam in December. To ensure the exam runs smoothly, the Accreditation Board’s intrepid invigilators have been exploring the new virtual environment. Thank you to all the AEs who have volunteered their time to support candidates in this way.
The exam preparation course on MoodleCloud is now available to purchase as well.
2 Membership
IPEd’s latest membership campaign is up and running. As we’ve mentioned, we’re reaching out to editors in a range of settings and to people in editing-adjacent roles whose work also depends on words.
Communications Officer Karina Tanos has emailed campaign information to all branches so please share this information with your networks if you can.
3 Support for the profession
The Standing Committee on Professional Development (SCPD) has been going from strength to strength this year, and we’ve had great levels of interest in our events program. The role of events officer, which we began trialling around a year ago, has been one key driver of this growth. As a result, IPEd will be extending this position for at least another 2 years.
Our thanks to Jean Cheney for the initiatives she’s helped to implement during her time with IPEd, including the Events Hub. Thanks also to SCPD Chair Louise Han and everyone on the committee for their efforts.
4 Focus for the organisation
The Board and staff have been busy preparing for the annual general meeting on 9 November. We hope you can join us there for a wrap-up of activities in 2025–26.
Meanwhile, we have also kicked off the strategic planning process as IPEd’s current plan comes to an end this year. We’re aware that some committees would like more guidance on where to focus their energy, so we’ll share information as soon as it becomes available.
If you need more immediate input from the Board, please contact your local director (details on the website). We’re always happy to have a chat or come along to one of your regular meetings.
5 Advocacy and education
Branches are reporting varying degrees of success in engaging with local organisations and events to raise the profile of editors. In particular, we thank Editors Queensland for updating us on their recent experiences with 2 regional writers festivals.
IPEd generally finds a very willing audience at events made for writers, but we sometimes struggle to make our mark at those with a high attendance from readers. All of this industry intelligence will, of course, feed into our next strategic plan.
The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for 23 November 2026.
