Board update

From the IPEd Board

This update reports on the IPEd Board meeting of 31 August 2026, linking to our 5 strategic priorities.

 1 Standards

The OPAL Working Party is making great progress with its first online learning initiative. It expects to launch an exam preparation course through MoodleCloud in September, in good time for those planning to sit the Language part of the accreditation exam on 7 December. Our thanks go to the course builders and testers.

Exam registrations are now open through the website and we’re pleased to see a steady stream of candidates signing up for this highly rewarding challenge.

2 Membership

We’re looking forward to our next membership campaign in October and November. It will reach out to editors in a range of settings and to people in editing-adjacent roles who also work with words. When the time comes, we invite you to share the campaign with your own connections – ready-made resources will be available to branches.

3 Support for the profession

Planning is well underway for the 2027 conference. However, we haven’t forgotten our commitment from last year’s conference plenary on IPEd’s future, where members generated a multitude of ideas about how we can raise our profile and support the profession. Our next step will be to report on what we are already doing, linking to the key themes from the plenary. We are also mapping out longer term objectives that will eventually feed into a new strategic plan.

One of the plenary ideas was to expand IPEd’s special interest groups, and we’re delighted to welcome our newest SIG, which connects business, government and corporate editors.

4 Focus for the organisation

It is annual report, ABM and AGM season! If you’re contributing to any of these processes, thank you for helping us paint a picture of IPEd’s many activities over the past year. While the overall financial results for 2025–26 were disappointing, we are seeing some positive early signs for the year ahead.

In more good news, the directors are now finalising a major revision to the branch by-laws. The goal is to simplify branch governance so committees can focus more on the activities that directly benefit members. We’re also reviewing a suite of policies, codes and forms to ensure they are fit for purpose and clear, including for incoming volunteers.

5 Advocacy and education

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Party has analysed the responses to the IPEd accessibility survey. The report is now published online, as we strive to embed accessibility across IPEd’s services, events and resources.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for 12 October 2026.
