Finding connections in 2025 and beyond
By Kyla Jo Magin, President, Editors Queensland
At the start of 2025, I never imagined I’d find myself on the Editors Queensland committee – let alone stepping into the role of president. It’s been a leap, but already I cherish the connections I’ve made with the team and local editors. For the first time, I feel anchored in a community of like-minded people – no longer adrift in a rapidly shifting industry, hanging onto connections stretched across other states and countries.
This year, I’ve loved seeing the exciting growth of EdsQ, with new committee members focused on connecting editors in Far North Queensland and in greater Brisbane. I look forward to seeing these new social networks flourish!
I’ve also been surprised with another connection this November – a litter of kittens washed up in my yard after a spring storm. In many ways, the fluffy bundles of energy remind me of joining EdsQ – sometimes taking on new responsibilities feels like more than I can handle amid an already busy life, yet these challenges are deeply rewarding. After many days of coaxing, we were able to bring in their mum and reunite the family. The whole experience reminds me to focus on what’s important in life. After all, where is the value in ticking off endless tasks if we miss the valuable connections waiting for us?
I’m excited to discover the new connections 2026 has in store. As president, I hope to foster stronger connections for editors in our sunny state. Next year, we plan to share short bios of all our wonderful EdsQ committee members, so you can get to know these amazing people who love the Queensland editing community. Keep an eye out for their stories and for each of them at our upcoming EdsQ events.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year period. Remember to plan times to rest in your own space and times to step out and build connections.
