IPEd

President’s report

By Deborah Shaw AE

Kia ora,

Towards the end of August, Andrea McKay AE and I spoke to this year’s Whitireia publishing diploma students – Andrea in person, me via Zoom. I loved hearing more about Andrea’s editing work and getting the backstory to her trips to the Texas Book Festival. Check out her article in this month’s Gatherings.

I spoke about my time at the conference, and together we talked more widely about IPEd and EdANZ. One student asked what advice we had for them as they finish their studies and enter the editing and publishing world. My advice was to make the most of the connections they have made during the year. Make those LinkedIn connections, send “hello” emails, go to book launches and author events. I extend that advice to all editors. While my website and directory listing bring in clients, some of my most fun and out-there projects have come from the connections I’ve made through editing friends and EdANZ members.

A big welcome to the new Board director appointed by EdANZ, Meredith Thatcher AE. Meredith has been a long-time IPEd member, and more recently, a key member of the Conference Committee, particularly for the 2023 conference. I’m so pleased to have her join the Board!

Finally, our Annual Branch Meeting is coming up soon, date to be confirmed. We’ll recap the year’s activities and hear from EdANZ members who participate in other committees. We’ll also be looking to fill a few vacancies. If you’re interested in volunteering, watch out for the updates in your inbox.

Thank you,

Deborah
