Hachette launches summer internship program

Hachette Australia has launched a new annual summer internship program for anyone interested in a career in publishing.

The full-time (38 hours a week) internship runs for four months and will be offered each summer. Applications have opened for the inaugural program, which starts in November 2020, and the position is expected to be highly sought after, especially as no formal qualifications are necessary.

CEO of Hachette Australia Louise Sherwin-Stark said: ‘We’re calling for applications from all people — whether you’re a student, a recent graduate, or contemplating a career pivot. If you have a passion for books, a love of reading and a genuine interest in working in book publishing, this internship could be your pathway to a permanent career in an industry that has, in the past, been regarded as difficult to break into. We are not focused on qualifications or experience, just a willingness to learn and a genuine curiosity about all aspects of the publishing process.’

The program provides a broad understanding of the trade publishing business and a deep dive into how the various departments within a commercial publishing house work together to take books to market — and ultimately into the hands of readers.

During the four-month program the intern will work within each division of Hachette Australia where they will receive training, attend key internal meetings, contribute to campaigns and accompany colleagues to external events such as sell-in meetings with booksellers and buyers, and support marketers and publicists at various locations for new title activations and author events.

Applicants should submit their CV, an expression of interest outlining what they most look forward to in a career in publishing and, if applicable, details of course accreditation. Send applications to careers@hachette.com.au by 30 September 2020.
