Take the ELS exam online

The Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) developed the Editors in Life Sciences (ELS) exam to test and evaluate proficiency in editing in the life sciences.

The examination, written by senior life-science editors assisted by testing experts, focuses on the principles and practices of scientific editing in English.

BELS is now offering the exam one month per quarter each year: 1–31 January,1–30 April, 1–31 July, 1–31 October. However, please note, for 2020, the exam is offered from 15 October to 15 November.

The exam is administered via computer-based testing using a global testing services provider with locations in more than 160 countries around the world. You also have the option to take the test remotely, at home or at another location of your choice, using your own computer.

The first step is application, then registration. If your application has been approved, you can see the exam schedule.

You can access the study guide and find answers to frequently asked questions.
