IPEd

By Caroline Birch AE

On 2 June 2026, Editors New South Wales hosted a stimulating presentation by Dr Joanna Beresford, a pre-service teacher educator, writer and neurodivergence advocate.

Dr Beresford spoke with the IPEd audience about how editors can work most productively with neurodivergent writers, avoiding some of the common pitfalls that can develop in this working relationship and supporting the writer to move the project forward. With 20 per cent of the population considered neurodivergent, an umbrella term that can include ADHD, autism, dyslexia and Tourette syndrome, editors can benefit from learning how to collaborate effectively with a wider range of clients.

In her open-hearted and wide-ranging presentation, Dr Beresford began by highlighting the similarities between the editing process and the lived experience of a neurodivergent person trying to mask their traits. The audience learned how a neurodivergent person may self-edit their communication style and physical movements, and the level of effort this accommodation can demand. She also discussed how valuable it is for a neurodivergent person to work with someone who has taken the time to understand these differences.

Participants were introduced to key concepts and terminology, explored common workplace traits and communication styles, and gained practical strategies for:

  • providing results-oriented and sensitive feedback
  • helping projects move forward when they become stuck
  • interpreting communication styles constructively
  • building collaborative relationships with neurodivergent clients.

The presentation concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, where editors shared their own experiences and perspectives. Dr Beresford also recommended a wide range of reading and viewing resources for those wishing to continue learning about neurodivergence.

A recording of Working with the neurodivergent writer will soon be available for purchase through the IPEd Shop, with discounted pricing for members and concession holders.
