From the Accreditation Board

Just because the accreditation exam was postponed, it doesn’t mean you have to give up on sharpening your editing skills. Try our quick exam taster with 6 questions similar to those in the Language part of the exam.

Also in this month’s report, you can get to know the Accreditation Board a little better (we promise not to harp on about our editing specialties). Plus, do you need to renew your accreditation this year? Only if you passed the exam in 2011, 2016 or 2021.

Want a taste of the exam?

We’ve prepared 6 questions similar to those in the Language part of the accreditation exam.

Check each of the following sentences for errors (you don’t have to check for factual errors). Some sentences may have no errors and others may have more than one error.

Q1 ‘What a mess!”, exclaimed Avery, how in Heaven’s name did that happen?”

Q2 Apple were founded in the 1970’s.

Q3 From 2030-2036 the population are expected to grow by twelve %.

Q4 The accreditation exam recognises and certifies your skills as a professional editor.

Q5 The editor recommended that the writer reign in their use of acronyms.

Q6 The following 2 sentences have the same grammatical error – what is it?

To attend the webinar, each participant needs their own headphones, laptop and log in 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

This report explains what threats AI poses to copyright, people using AI at work and why.

A subject–verb disagreement

B non-parallel structure

C comma splice

D misplaced modifier

Congratulations! If you were sitting the exam, you would have just answered 25% of the Language part.

We’ll share the answers with you in next month’s Gatherings. If you can’t wait until then, email your answers to Emily at ednsw.ab@iped-editors.org

What does the Accreditation Board do when it’s not accrediting?

We develop and administer the accreditation exam, manage renewals and develop the accreditation scheme. But that’s not all: we’re professional editors from around Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

We could tell you about our editing specialties, but we’d rather share our passions with you! As you’d expect, we’ve got avid readers and writers in our ranks – Claire even published a book in 2024.

The Accreditation Board is an all-singing, all-dancing, all-skating production, with tap dancing (Charlotte), samba (Emily), Jazzercise (Catherine), choral singing (Ted) and artistic roller skating (Amanda). These hobbies keep our brains and bodies strong, but the strongest of us all is Nina, whose passion is weightlifting.

On the cozy front, we love puzzling, sewing, cooking, gardening (especially Liz) and spending time with our furry rescue friends.

Travel is a priority, especially for Catherine, who has lived in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and the Netherlands. Collectively, we’ve been far and wide, from the frozen northern climes of Canada and Mongolia, through delicious Europe and Asia, to sweltering, vibrant Africa. None of us has made it to Antarctica yet, but it’s on the list!

As for the writing and marking teams, the members’ identities are top secret, so we don’t want to give them away by telling you their hobbies!

Who needs to renew their accreditation this year?

Join 3 of our Accreditation Board members (Ted, Liz and Amanda) in renewing your accreditation if you passed the exam in 2011, 2016 or 2021.

Applications open on 1 May and Charlotte Cottier, Accreditation Board chair, will email you everything you need to know.

Get started by thinking about the past 5 years and your:

  • editing work and examples of projects you can share
  • professional development activities (e.g. mentoring, conferences, tertiary courses or training through IPEd).
