Ever wondered what the difference is between a “post” and a “story” on Instagram? The IPEd members who attended the Editors WA (EdWA) workshop “Social media for editors”, held on Thursday 15 February 2024, can now tell you.

This workshop, presented by EdWA President Jess Gately, was certainly one for the books as the sold-out event afforded its attendees some much-needed insight into the daunting world of promoting oneself through the various social media platforms available today.

To kick off the session, Jess provided some succinct information regarding social media: what it is, what its relevance and importance is in the world today, and why we as editors need to make use of it. Our attendees got to learn what the different available platforms are and why each would be used, what sort of content could be posted, and some insight into the varied terminology that is used online.

Jess let her expertise shine as she then dove into a practical demonstration of posting content on social media. This showed attendees exactly how one goes about drafting and posting both posts and stories to Instagram – an important channel for garnering social media engagement within the world of fiction. The focus here was less on what to post but rather on how to post. If you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed by the various buttons and features available to you when posting, this valuable how-to session would be perfect for you.

Based on the degree of involvement from the attendees, as well as the brilliant and focused questions that were directed to Jess, there is a keen desire from editors to get more involved in social media as a means of promoting themselves, their brands and their businesses.

Thank you again to Jess Gately and to all those who attended this helpful and engaging workshop on social media for editors.
