IPEd

From the committee

By Paul Anderson and Russell Noakes

The Editors New South Wales committee met on 11 April for its monthly meeting via Zoom, with one apology.

Minutes of the March committee meeting were accepted with amendments and actions from previous meetings dealt with.

Written reports received included:

  • Accreditation Board delegate’s report
  • branch budget commentary with financial estimates to the end of March 2023
  • IPEd Director’s update
  • presentations schedule for 2023.

Russell Noakes has resigned as a Director of IPEd. The committee thanks Russell for his significant and ongoing contributions to the organisation. He remains in his other roles, as IPEd’s Company Secretary and the branch’s Budget Officer.

The committee resolved to appoint IPEd member Justine Dixon as the branch-appointed Director from New South Wales to fill the casual vacancy. As the branch-appointed Director Justine also becomes an ex-officio voting committee member. The committee looks forward to working with Justine.

The committee had resolved out-of-session by email to approve the proposed branch budget for 2023–24 after which it was submitted to the IPEd Finance Officer.

Sally Asnicar was our guest speaker in April to talk about her “Self-care and business care for editors” resource. This proved a good segue from our February panel discussion on “How to grow one’s freelance editing business”. Thank you, Sally.

Access to the recording of Sally’s talk is available for online purchase (and free if you paid to attend). A copy of her resource will also be provided to those who retrospectively pay for access to the recording.

Our next speaker presentations will be on 16 May and 6 June. In May, Leanne Manthorpe and Susan Baird will provide “An update on the Australian Government Style Manual”; and in June, Dr Linda Nix AE will present “Effectively using it: how good grammar contributes to clearer writing.”

We have a networking dinner coming up at Primi Italian, 168 Clarence Street, Sydney on 18 July. The is our traditional winter dinner. We look forward to seeing you there. Please check your email for the invitations sent to all members.

The next committee meeting on 23 May will have occurred by the time June Gatherings is published.

Due to publishing deadlines, the May issue of “From the committee” report will appear in a later issue of Gatherings.
