EdSA plans high-level strategy for next year

by Melanie Dankel

At Editors SA, our new committee is rapidly getting up to speed on their portfolios and looking forward to a productive and exciting year ahead. Part of our initial work is to look at our high-level strategy and where we want to focus our attention in the next 12 months.

Some of our ideas are worthy but perhaps overly ambitious, while other ideas have strong recurring themes. We’re asking ourselves questions such as: What does it mean to be an editor today? How do we connect with the people who edit for a good chunk of their job, but might not necessarily identify as an editor? And closer to home: how can we engage more of our membership in what we do? (If we haven’t seen you on Zoom lately, why not?) We hope all this deep thinking will help us focus on what we think is important and achievable for our branch for the coming year. And of course, it’s our members who we hope will benefit most from this process.

We held another successful Zoom book club on 15 October, hosted by immediate past President Lauren Bevilacqua. There were some great leads on hot reads, and it was nice to see some familiar faces and some interstate members attending.

Planning is under way for our online Christmas trivia night on 10 December. And we hope to see some of you at our first face-to-face event for a while at our Christmas picnic in the Botanic Gardens on 13 December. BYO food, drinks and picnic rug. Family and friends are welcome. Fingers crossed for nice weather.

As always, we welcome members who would like to be more involved in branch activities. We understand not everyone can volunteer large blocks of time, so we welcome people who might just want to see what it’s all about, can help out on a more casual basis or have an interest in a specific area. Please email me at edsa-president@iped-editors.org.

Your new committee is:

  • Jo Vabolis, Secretary and Vice-President
  • Adele Anderson, Budget Officer
  • Mike Lim and Sumudu Narayana, Marketing and Communications Coordinators
  • Alice Healy and Kirsty Smeaton, Events Coordinators
  • Adele Anderson and Sumudu Narayana, Membership Coordinators

Congratulations to everyone on their new roles.

Welcome to new members

A warm welcome to our new associate members Catherine Blesing and Tina Morganella.

We hope you enjoy being part of Editors SA and take advantage of IPEd’s networks. We look forward to seeing you at our workshops and other events throughout the year. Familiarise yourself with Zoom to get the most out of 2020’s offerings — there will be more distance events this year.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter and LinkedIn, and keep an eye on our branch page for updates. The IPEd newsletter will keep you informed of SA- and IPEd-wide news and events. These are all good forums for socialising and networking and, of course, provide opportunities to build your knowledge and expertise.

Get involved and don’t be shy. We are thrilled to have you on board.

Upcoming events

Editors SA’s annual Christmas trivia event will move online this year and be held on 10 December. Planning is in progress for this festive favourite, with event details to follow.

We are also planning an informal, socially distant Christmas picnic at the Botanic Gardens on 13 December. BYO food, drinks and picnic rug. Family and friends are welcome, with final event details to follow.

Follow us on social media, and keep an eye out in your emails for the latest updates.
