Meet the Editors Queensland committee: Kyla Jo Magin, President

When Kyla Jo embarked on a mission to connect with local editors, she didn’t know much about EdsQ, the Queensland branch of IPEd. Now, just one year later, as its President, she guides EdsQ’s management committee in welcoming new members, connecting EdsQ with the wider IPEd community, and creating opportunities for Queensland editors to network, learn and thrive. Kyla Jo also volunteers for IPEd’s Standing Committee on Awards and Prizes with the Rosie Award team.
As President, I’m inspired by the experiences of long-term members and equally involved in the realities newer editors face. My own love of editing began with a UQP editorial internship in 2015. I then deepened my skills through UQ’s Writing, Editing and Publishing program and now specialise in educational resources and memoirs through my freelance business, Empathy Editing.
Alongside her love of words, Kyla Jo is developing visual communication skills as a typesetter, infographic artist and cover designer.
Connecting with the EdsQ community has been an enriching experience and an invaluable source of inspiration and opportunity. I find that editors have the best conversations; when you find your people, it doesn’t matter how introverted you are! I love swapping editorial insights, obscure language facts and fascinating ideas that editors gather through their work.
Whether in person at EdsQ’s Brisbane events or online, I am always open to chat about editing – or anything else!
At other times, Kyla Jo is nose-deep in a manuscript or building more shelves for her ever-growing book and tea collections.
