IPEd members were recently invited to attend Dr Malini Devadas’s workshop “Social media for editors: How to use LinkedIn and Instagram to find clients”. This workshop was organised by IPEd’s Standing Committee for Professional Development (SCPD) as part of the national PD offering, and ran on Friday 21 July.

The three-hour workshop was tailored for freelance editors wanting to utilise social media platforms to further their business outreach. Dr Devadas debunked some common mentality sinkholes freelancers often feel deterred by when it comes to self-promoting online, before moving on to discuss why LinkedIn and Instagram are the two best platforms to be seen and discovered by potential clients. The session came together with Dr Devadas’s expert guidance about how to make the most of your chosen social media platform by tailoring it to your target client niche and knowing what sort of content works best to help them find you and make the leap from follower to client.

Malini Devadas showed her skill for monitoring the Zoom chat while speaking, keeping workshoppers engaged in discussions, and encouraging them to take charge of their social media presence. Her workshop was both informative and empowering, providing freelance editors with the confidence to implement a strong social media strategy.
