Message from the President

A lot has been going on behind the scenes at EdWA so I hope you will join us on 12 August for our Annual Branch Meeting (ABM) to hear about what we’ve achieved in the past year and what we’re looking forward to doing over the next year. If that’s not enough to entice you, we have a special guest speaker for the event, Stephen White, who will be tell us about  government and scientific editing before the official proceedings.

You may have received an increased number of event notices in recent weeks. We’ve begun launching our program for the next six months and we’re excited about the range of speakers and their experience that we will present to you in the coming months.

Highlights to look out for include our one-day spring seminar on Saturday 25 September with guest speakers Monica Ronghe, Kerry Coyle, Ingrid Waltham and Rhonda Bracey; Structural editing in fiction workshops with Louise Thurtell; Grammar refresher course with Linda Nix; Copyright and permissions with guest speakers Rebekah Sheedy and Linda Martin at branch meetings; Editing flash fiction with Laura Keenan from Night Parrot Press; and our social events like our new Read like an editor book club, our in-person catch-ups with the Café Society, and our online Zoom socials.

As we approach the ABM we’d love members to join us on the committee to help run events and/or be our representatives on IPEd-wide committees, and help make recommendations that shape the editing profession across Australia and New Zealand. Currently, our members sit on committees for Professional Development, Communications, Academic editing, Mentoring and Accreditation. IPEd also has committees for Accessibility, Awards and prizes, and IPEd Standards. If you’d like to have a greater influence on how IPEd approaches any of these topics, we’d love to speak to you.

And that wraps it up from me. If you ever want to discuss things happening with the branch — things you’d like to see from the committee — or run any events of your own with EdWA, feel free to shoot me an email at edwa.president@iped-editors.org

Until next time.

Jess Gately

New member profile: Andrea Walters

Andrea Walters

Andrea’s career with words began as a teacher of advanced-level English literature and English language in the UK.

Unable to ignore a travel itch, she spent two years sailing the Caribbean aboard several cruise ships as Youth Activities Manager, dressed as a pirate. While immense fun, this was Andrea’s first experience of leading others, and at times she found herself completely ‘at sea’. So began her interest in how we become better leaders.

Andrea returned to shore, adding psychology to her teaching credentials and achieving human resources and management qualifications. Over the next few years, Andrea worked with businesses and government to develop leadership skills in the hospitality and tourism sector across North West England.

Following a move to Perth in 2007, Andrea joined the team at the Australian Institute of Management WA (AIM WA), holding several roles, including Director, Personal Membership Services and Head of Events and Engagement. These positions involved working within editorial teams for AIM WA publications, curating, editing and creating thought-leadership communications.

AIM WA is soon to launch a new, online editorial space. Andrea’s role as Editor of Workplace Conversations appeals to her curiosity about people and her love of story-sharing and connecting to inspire better leadership.
