President’s report
By Deborah Shaw AE
Kia ora,
At the end of September I put on my going-out shirt and chaired the EdANZ annual branch meeting (ABM). Thank you to all those who were able to join us! I loved seeing the mix of familiar and new faces.
As well as hearing from our committee, we heard from EdANZ members who sit on other IPEd committees. It was great to learn about all the exciting projects and work that is happening across IPEd, and I especially love how many EdANZ members are on those committees. Thank you so much to Andrea, Tanja, Meredith and Elizabeth for sharing updates with us.
- Andrea McKay AE is on the Standing Committee on Awards and Prizes and coordinates the Student Prize.
- Tanja Gardner is on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Party and spoke at the IPEd conference.
- Meredith Thatcher AE is our new branch-appointed director and a long-time member of IPEd.
- Elizabeth Beattie AE is on the Accreditation Board and helps coordinate the exam.
And thank you to our own committee: Joan, Rina, Jane and Juanita. Thank you for all your work and support!
Joining IPEd committees is a fantastic way to be part of the editing community and help shape the direction of our industry. If you see an expression of interest email for a committee that excites you, I encourage you to join.
At the ABM, Jane Matthews stepped down as our newsletter coordinator, a role she’s held for the last few years. Jane has saved you from having to read too many of my clunky sentences!
So, we have a vacancy on the committee as our newsletter coordinator. You would be editing my updates for Gatherings and coordinating with EdANZ contributors. The time commitment is around 5 hours per month. This is a great opportunity if you’re a newer editor wanting an encouraging space to develop your editing and make connections with EdANZ members. Established editors are most welcome, too!
I’ve been doing work behind the scenes with Rhonda Daniels AE and Kerry Davies AE from the Pay and Conditions Standing Committee. We’ll be updating the editors’ pay rates page on the IPEd website to include information about GST and NZBNs (New Zealand business numbers) for Aotearoa New Zealand editors. I’ve also been collecting data from editing vacancies so we can better understand in-house pay rates within Aotearoa.
Great news: The Whitirea publishing diploma is no longer at risk of ending; the Publishers Association of New Zealand is taking over responsibility for the course. This is a great result!
Finally, if you’re a member of the EdANZ Facebook group, you may have noticed a new-ish face posting to the group. Rina Wongpanich has taken over from me as our social media coordinator, so you’ll see her name more often in your feed. She’ll continue sharing job vacancies as they come up, as well as editing-related articles and posts. Thank you, Rina!
Wishing you all a wonderful break over the Christmas and New Year period. I hope you’re able to take time off and spend time with friends and family outside.
See you next year!
Deborah
