The sample exam has been developed to help you prepare for the exam. (The first exam is scheduled for 2008). Do the sample exam first, using these notes as a guide, then download the answer sheet/marking guide and mark yourself.
- Find a quiet space in which you can work uninterrupted.
- Make sure you have an alarm clock or digital timer, a calculator and a few sheets of blank paper for notes and workings.
- Download the sample exam and print out a copy.
- The exam will be ‘open book', so use the reference books you are planning to take into the actual exam (and note down any others you think you will need as a result of doing the sample exam).
- Set aside 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the exam.
- Allow the first 15 minutes to read through the entire paper.
- The actual exam should be completed within 3 hours. Time yourself and try to set aside the last 15 minutes to review what you have written.
- Assume the exam will require hard-copy editing and handwritten answers (the possibility of an on-screen exam is still being investigated).
- When your time is up, download the answer sheet/marking guide. You can mark yourself or ask a friend to do it.
- Attend the accreditation workshop scheduled in your state/territory (Sept.-Oct. 2007). The sample exam and answer sheet/marking guide will be discussed there in detail. Your state's assessors will be available to offer advice and answer any queries you may have. The workshop will give you the opportunity to:
- share with peers your experiences of sitting the sample exam
- express concerns or make suggestions to the Accreditation Board delegate
- talk to your committee about professional development/education opportunities that would further help you prepare for the exam.
Background
- The Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) is the accrediting body/authority for Australian editors.
- Development and administration of the Examination for Accreditation is overseen by the Accreditation Board, on behalf of IPEd.
- The exam papers, answers and marking guides are developed by the Assessors Forum, a working group made up of all of the assessors appointed by the states.
- The exam itself is organised by the state societies, with support provided by an exam coordinator, invigilators and assessors, who mark the exam after moderation.
