Improving this site, and its relevance to the editing community, is an important task. This short survey is the first in a series that aims to gather some demographic and technical data intended to aid in future site development. Additionally, the survey results might provide additional substance to a training needs analysis of computer literacy within the community.
Computer literacy is the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently. Computer literacy can also be the comfort level someone has with using computer programs. Commonly, computer literate means little more than the ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Outlook for certain very well-defined simple tasks, largely by rote. Real problems can arise when such a computer literate person encounters a new program for the first time, and large degrees of help will likely be required.
In order to stay relevant we must keep pace with the rapid rate of Internet development and the increasing reliance on it for the conduct of daily business. So this small survey, and others yet to be conducted, will help identify areas within the community that need attention if we are to stay relevant. It will also help identify how much technology can be put into the server that runs this site while still remaining relevant to the hardware and software the community uses.
In the future it may be possible to use the information gathered in the surveys to underpin a grant application for computer literacy training within the community.
