26 March 2008
The IPEd Accreditation Board is pleased to announce that the date for the first editing exam has been set for Saturday 26 July 2008.
The three-hour exam is based on Australian Standards for Editing Practice, (CASE (now IPED), 2001) and will earn successful candidates the rank of Accredited Editor (AE). It is expected that an editor with two to three years' editing experience or equivalent will pass the exam.
The exam is to be hard copy and will be marked by members of the Assessors Forum, a group of senior editors nominated by the state/territory societies as being their most experienced career editors. Because this is the very first exam, the assessors will not be marking papers in isolation: they will meet directly after the exam and mark the papers in consultation with each other. The board believes this is the best way to ensure that all papers are marked fairly and consistently. Please be assured that papers will be identified only by number, not by name, to protect candidates' privacy.
The cost for sitting the exam will be announced directly after a meeting of the IPEd Council on 12-13 April. At the same time, the Accreditation Board will place an application form and Guidelines for Candidates on the IPEd website. It is expected that the deadline for applications will be 29 May. Over the next four months, the Accreditation Board delegates will work with their societies to help prospective candidates prepare for the exam.
Another issue of CredAbility (#8) will be distributed to all societies in mid-April for publication in their newsletters, but precise details about where the exam will be held in each state/territory cannot be provided until the number of candidates in each location has been confirmed.
An exam development team and an exam coordinator are about to be appointed. In preparing the brief for the exam development team, the Accreditation Board considered comments and feedback from editors across the country as well as from the Assessors Forum and came to a decision on all issues. We believe that the 2008 exam will be a fair test of editors' abilities, but would point out that accreditation is an ongoing process and with each successive year the exam will be refined.
We look forward to announcing the first cohort of Accredited Editors in October. We hope you will be one of them!
