Feature article

The editor as historian: Cathy Perkins

At the Editors NSW June 2020 meeting, author and editor Cathy Perkins talked about her editorial work at the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW), which led to years of historical research for her new biography, The Shelf Life of Zora Cross.

IPEd news

Profile: EdANZ Branch President
In this issue of Gatherings, we profile ANZ Branch President Caroline Simpson. When and why did you join IPEd?
I joined IPEd three years ago because I thought it was important to be seen to be part of a professional organisation, and I wanted training opportunities.

CEO column

Welcome to the July issue of Gatherings.
This is the fourth issue of the IPEd-wide newsletter and it has been gradually evolving and improving.

Accreditation exam, resources and workshops update
The Accreditation Board (AB) has set Saturday 5 December 2020 as the new date for the 2020 accreditation exam and re-opened registrations.

Call for presenters: IPEd conference Hobart June 2021

For this conference, we are seeking interpretations of how the concepts of writing, editing and the edge interact. Where does the edge of your editing practice lie?

General interest

What Editors SA members are reading
In this section, you’ll find short and sweet book reviews by Editors SA members. If you’ve read something you want to tell your fellow members about, email Lauren.

Recommended recent releases for word nerds
Amanda Montell is a writer and linguist from Baltimore, and her brash, funny, incredibly clever book examines the deeply gendered origins of not just words but language itself.

Book review: Because internet: understanding how language is changing, Gretchen McCulloch
The internet is everywhere. We use it for working, playing, socialising, keeping up with the news, studying, shopping and watching our favourite shows on streaming services.

Working with a graphic designer
Tricia started with a terrific strategy to get her audience on-side by saying, ‘I love having a chance to work with an editor’. And in her talk, she substantiated that sentiment in many ways and made it clear that it was heartfelt.

This is not a book review
Let’s be clear. I don’t write book reviews, so this is not a book review of Faber & Faber: The Untold Story by Toby Faber (Faber & Faber Ltd, 2019).

Upcoming training: Advanced macros
Do you have basic familiarity with running macros in Microsoft Word but suspect you are not getting the most out of them? If so, this workshop will help you to bring your skills to the next level.

Highlights from Comma Sutra with Louisa Fitzhardinge
EdsVic warmly invites all members of IPEd to a special online members-only performance of highlights from Louisa Fitzhardinge’s hit musical comedy show about grammar
